Baya's Takeaways from Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week: Addressing the Alarming Waste Statistics and Moving towards a Sustainable Future

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Eco-friendly Laundry detergent products

This week, the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week took place, bringing together leaders from around the world to discuss and take action on pressing sustainability issues. Baya attended the Ecowaste Forum, to share their commitment to creating sustainable products and solutions.

The main subjects discussed at the Ecowaste Forum included the circular economy, packaging requirements in a circular economy, and the rise in technologies and apps aimed at helping with recycling. These issues are of great importance as we look to address the global waste crisis and move towards a more sustainable future.

One of the key takeaways was the alarming waste statistics in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to data, UAE per capita waste is 68% higher than the global average, with 1.1 million MT of plastic waste alone in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The total amount of waste generated in the UAE is estimated to be around 38-40 Million MT, and the majority of this waste ends up in landfills, with a landfill dumping rate of 90%. The recycling rate in the UAE is also alarmingly low, at just 7%.

The global plastic production output has increased from 0 tonnes in 1950 to 350 tonnes in 2015. This highlights the urgent need to take action to reduce our dependence on plastic and move towards a circular economy where resources are reused and recycled.

There are a number of ways in which we can do this, including:

  1. Reducing our consumption of single-use plastics and other disposable items.
  2. Increasing our recycling efforts and diverting more waste from landfills.
  3. Investing in sustainable technologies and infrastructure.
  4. Supporting and purchasing products from companies that prioritize sustainability.

By using eco-friendly cleaning products like Baya, we can also play a role in reducing our environmental impact.
